Retirement...

All my moments settle in the room in different degrees of truth and accuracy. The harsher edges of recollection appear to be softening; it's easy to forgive things that cannot change, easier still to be both player and spectator, with all the innings filled before the game. It's not about who won, but how you played. The 20-watt memories were meant to dull … In the quiet I don't hear the elbows of any memory trying for the front of the line.

9/9/2011!

It was a rain so thick it darkened the afternoon to dusk.  Great sheets snapped against the windshield,  the wipers making only a shy attempt at clearing the melting landscapes. I had never seen a lateral rainbow, didn’t know they existed, but there it was off to the south stretching maybe a mile ,  the monoliths becoming involuntary silhouettes… and we caught it!

Remarkable!

SWarms

So my kid tells me, "You’ve gotta try this Shake Weight—you will not believe the workout it gives your arms!" I'm skeptical, but he knowsstuff … and he's built like I used to be, like I want to be again. I buy the Shake Weight. Three to four months later, I'm telling people, "You’ve gotta try this— it’s incredible!"
Remember the advertisements on the back of comic books? The ones where you could sell salve or seeds? There was always an ad where the guy is on the beach and gets sand kicked into his face. The girl next to him is embarrassed and looks away. Then, after the guy does months of "Atlas" training, the next frame shows how he clocks the bully and the girl is swooning. Well, no sand, but it’s … incredible!
